What is GPA?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is a word that you may encounter in both high school and college. A GPA is a figure that shows your average score. A grade point may be expressed as a number or as a letter. For example, if you receive an A, it generally stands for a number, usually a multiple of four, so if you get an A, your GPA is four, and if you get a B, the grade point drops to three, and the scale continues to move according to the grading system. Depending on the nation you are in and which institution you are enrolled in, there are several methods for calculating your grade point. Let’s look at how to determine your GPA using an example:

Assume you take three courses each worth three credits.
Subject 1- A (4 on the GPA scale)
Subject 2- C (2 on the GPA scale)
Subject 3- B (3 on the GPA scale)

Now multiply the grade by the credits to get 12 for Subject 1, 6 for Subject 2, and 9 for Subject 3. If we put these numbers together, your total grade point is 27, and if we divide it by the total credits, which is 9 (3+3+3), we obtain the number 3, indicating that your GPA is 3. As a result, credits play an essential part in calculating your grade point.

While most institutions require candidates to submit their grades on a 10-point scale, others require candidates to submit their grades on a four-point scale. Candidates are not obliged to do the conversions directly; they are handled by third-party agencies; nevertheless, candidates may perform a preliminary calculation for reference purposes only.
