What is the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS as it is more commonly known, is an English language competence exam that non-native students must complete in order to study in countries where English is the medium of instruction. Universities in Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States recognise IELTSTM. It is now a requirement for studying in Australia.

If you want to take the IELTS, you need know that there are two different types of IELTS exams: Academic and General. The Listening and Speaking parts are the same for all students. IELTS Academic and IELTS General, on the other hand, have different Reading and Writing components. Make sure you know which test type is best for you.

What is IELTS Academic?

  • ListeningYou must listen to four distinct recordings of native English speakers speaking in this segment. Following each recording, you will be asked a series of questions. The first two portions are about ordinary social situations, while the last two are about educational and training situations.
  • ReadingThis part takes 60 minutes to complete and includes three lengthy texts. These texts are general and drawn from books, journals, periodicals, or newspapers. For replies, students are expected to skim and read these passages.
  • WritingThe IELTS writing test is 60 minutes long. The first assignment in the test is to write a 150-word description of a table, chart, or diagram. The second challenge requires you to compose a 250-word short essay.
  • SpeakingIt takes around 11-14 minutes to complete the IELTS speaking test. This is a face-to-face interview portion of the test. The interview resembles a discussion between the examiner and the test taker. It helps you to naturally converse with the examiner about a known topic.
