Cracking the Visa Interview

  • One of the most important steps to acquiring an overseas education is getting a visa. Visa is imperative to study in any foreign country.
  • Most students dread the visa interview, as there are chances of the visa getting rejected. This would lead to a halt in your education plans.
  • Therefore, this article provides certain tips and dos and don’ts for a visa interview. This would make your visa process much simpler and keep you calm through it.
  1. Most importantly, you should have all your documents handy and be well dressed for your interview.
  2. You must be on time and exude confidence and composure.
  3. You should answer confidently and provide honest answers to the visa officer. Remember, they have all your document copies and also have knowledge about your financial background. Therefore, don’t try to fool them or give false information.
  4. Be certain about your education plans and why you are choosing a particular country, course, and college. The Visa Officer wants to know why you should be allowed to go to a particular country and if you have the financial means to afford the education you have planned for.

Make sure to have answers for the following questions:

  1. Why did you decide to go to a particular university?
  2. Why do you want to study in a particular country?
  3. What do you plan to do after the completion of the course?
  4. Do you plan to work abroad or return to the country?
  5. Given an opportunity, would you settle abroad?
  6. Why would you come back after the course?
  7. How do you plan to sponsor your education?
  • The answers to these questions should be handled tactfully and honestly. You must always tell the visa officer that you plan to return after the course. Or if your college offers certain work opportunities after the course, then make sure to mention the same to the visa officer.
  • Be certain about your career and plans in case the visa officer asks about it. You should be clear as to why you have opted for a particular course and how it is aligned with your career goals.
  • Inform the visa officer about your family in the country, which is your reason to return to the country. Make sure you know well about your finances and bank statements and be prepared to answer any questions regarding the same.
  1. Make sure to know everything about your course and college- the course duration, the course content, the infrastructure of the university, the research being conducted in the university related to your course, commencement date, etc.
  2. Also, have your accommodation plans ready. You should know beforehand where you would stay. The visa officer needs to know that you are prepared to go and have made all the arrangements.
  3. Do not get into arguments with the visa officer. Be polite and keep your answers precise and to the point.
Never give the impression that you don’t plan to return to your country or that you have plans to immigrate and seek employment in a foreign country. You must make sure to convey that you will return once your course terminates.
  4. Lastly, don’t forget to thank the interviewer for his time and patience.
